Over the course of the last few years we’ve seen the western industry move away from rhinestone embellished tack and bling packed outfits to a more subtle take on things. Native prints, beading and dark tooled leather have emerged as a subtle statement that pack a punch. One embellishment that pairs well with bling and with subtleties is studs.

Sure we’ve all seen the rockers from the 80’s (and beyond) wearing fully studded jackets and pants and the motorcycle groups wearing studs but western fashion has taken the studs up once again in manner that speaks to my soul. I’m a cowgirl rocker at heart, if such a thing exists. I love leather, fringe, rhinestones and studs.

One reason I love studs is that they can manage to make any outfit look chic and rugged at the same time. They are perfect to give a lace dress a little edge or a basic belt some flair. Perfect for channeling your inner Miranda Lambert!

Another reason, they are versatile. They can transition from the western world, to the biker scene, or to the rock concerts. They give any outfit the right amount of punch without demanding to be the entire focus of any outfit.

Double J Saddlery has a wide belt that gives any outfit the right amount of edge. For jackets with studded sass I recommend Double D Ranchwear. They have jackets to die for!

They are durable, unlike fragile rhinestones which can crack under pressure, metal studs can withstand everyday wear and tear. Like leather as they get more worn they gather more character and truly become a one-of-a-kind piece of art.

Old Gringo and Corral make some amazing works of art that are studded in all the right ways. Here are some of my favorite finds.

Aside from being wearable art, studs make great additions to tack. Subtle shine gives tack set a finished look or can take a work headstall up a notch and make it show ring ready. Bonus, studs are gender neutral. Everyone can wear them with pride.

For some great tack sets I recommend Running Roan Tack or KB Kustom Kreations. Both specialize in beautiful studded tack sets at reasonable prices.
