Ponoka, AB: Ponoka’s Rodeo Masters started off their weekend of events last night at the Calnash Ag Event Center with a Steer Wrestling Tournament and Roughstock Futurity. Many of Canada’s top Steer Wrestlers were part of this newer style format, including recent Canadian Champion Tanner Milan, past champion Cody Cassidy, All Around Champion Steven Turner and countless others.
Starting out with 16 bull doggers, each faced another as the field narrowed by half with each round. Each man made a run on each steer to even things out. Round Four would be the finals.
Many of Canada’s top stock contractors had stock entered in the Roughstock Futurity. With the entry fees set at $200 each, a total of $3,000 would be paid out to the top few animals. Bareback was first.
Monday’s Ultimate Cowboy Contestant Colter Harden took on Dale Woodward’s Two Dollar Coin.
Justin Twogood’s City Storm gave Dylan Bilton a run for his money.
After round three of the Steer Wrestling, the Bronc Riding would get under way. Wyzykoski’s Millertime put up a good score with Layton Green on top.
Dawson’s Creek of Bar C5’s won the Saddle Bronc end of the futurity over Millertime with this trip featuring Justin Berg.
After three rounds of Steer Wrestling, Tanner Milan and Steve Turner faced off for the title. Steve went first, putting up a time of 4.4.
Tanner went next laying down his steer in five seconds flat.
Taner then went again besting Steve’s time by six tenths, at 3.8.
With that, it all came down to one run but Steve wasn’t quite fast enough to get past Tanner’s total time. Congratulations to Tanner for winning this first ever Rodeo Masters Steer Wrestling Tournament.
In the bull riding, the Vold and Prescott bull Uncle Buck took home top honors with an 87 point score he put up against Zane Lambert.
Tonight it’s the Ultimate Cowgirl Championship starting at 7:00pm. Tomorrow, New Years Eve it’s Canada’s Ultimate Cowboy Championship. Both will prove to be very entertaining events with many people competing in events in which they usually wouldn’t. Tickets are still available for both which will take place at the Calnash Ag Events Center.
See you today and tomorrow in Ponoka!
