Rodeo Schools in Canada for the 2014 Season

**New schools added April 3rd, 2014 in Quebec!

CALGARY, Alberta — Last year we talked about some of the schools we knew about going on in Canada. It turned out to be mostly roughstock and that’s how it is this year again. If you’re looking to get started or brush up on your skills, we recommend attending any of these schools or as many as you can make it to.

The first school coming up is less than two weeks away. Jake Vold and Rylan Geiger are having a Bareback and Saddle Bronc School January 31st and February 1st and 2nd in Olds, AB at the college arena. Horses are being brought by Outlaw Buckers, Darcy Hollingsworth and , Justin Twogood. Message Jake Vold on Facebook with any questions or call Kirby Black to sign up at 403-352-5608. Tuition is $350.00 per student and there are only spots left in the bareback riding side of things.

On another note, Rylan and Jake will hold another school later in the year, this one in Medicine Hat from April 18th to 20th at the Wyld Win Arena. Stay tuned for more details on that if you missed the first one.

March 8th and 9th at the Rocky Bar Arena in Esterhazy, SK former bullfighter, now turned steer wrestler, David Sandilands is holding a bull riding, bull fighting and steer riding school. 2009 Canadian Bull Riding Champion Brett Thompson and 2007 Canadian Bull Riding Champion Nathan Roy are helping him with that school. The annual FCA Judging Clinic will be held on Sunday March 9, 2014, in conjunction with the Olds College Rodeo. It’s open to everyone who is interest in judging, starting at 9:00a.m with a cost of $75.00. For more information contact Pat Dillman, FCA Judging Director at 403-844-5529 or

World Champion Riders Bobby Mote and Monty Henson, Bareback and Saddle Bronc School along with the Jim Kelts Pick-up Man School March 25, 26 and 27th located at Bearspaw Arena in Cochrane, AB. Prices are $350.00 for saddle Bronc and Bareback and $450.00 for Pick-up. $150.00 deposit is needed to hold your spot for this school. Call Kelli McLean at 403-704-4344 or email to register.

As it’s been the past few years, the Johansen Brothers are holding their bull riding and bull fighting school April 4th to 6th in Vermilion, AB along with the Lakeland College CPRA Bull Riding on that weekend. Two-time Canadian Champion Bull Rider Scott Schiffner is also one of the teachers. A couple weeks later in Olds, AB the Johansen Brothers will tentatively hold a steer riding school from the 18th to 20th. Schiffner, who has learned from the Johansen brothers himself at their 1995 school in Vermillion will help with the steer riding school in Olds as well. The start of April is busy with the 3rd and 4th Erik Dublanko putting on a Tie Down Roping clinic at the Thorsby Haymaker Center. Tuition is $350 per student, it’s on the same time as spring break. Contact Erik for details by phone at 780-940-9697.

Also from the 4th to 6th of April, there’s a bareback and saddle bronc school, held in Thorsby, Alberta. Instructors there are Dave Shields Sr. and Skeeter Thurston, stock is supplied by John Duffy who added there will be “No colts and no try outs.” Entries are limited, call John Duffy for your spot at 780-682-2258.

Chase Simpson and Braidy Davies are holding a youth team roping clinic at the Wyld Win Arena in Medicine Hat on April 5th and 6th. You must be 18 and under to qualify to enter, ten will be taken on each end. Tuition is $250 per student. Contact Chase or Braidy for details.

The following couple days, if you’re a steer wrestler, April 7th and 8th you’ll want to make sure you can be at the Wyld Win Arena to learn from four-time World Champion Luke Branquinho and Canadian Champion Todd Woodward near Medicine Hat. A deposit of $300 is due to Woodward by March 1st to guarantee your spot. Total tuition is $550. Participants must supply their own horses. In between those two schools of Scott’s is the bull riding and bullfighting school featuring NFR Bull Fighter Aaron Ferguson and World Champion Bull Rider “The Guru” Gary Leffew. That school is April 11th to 13th in Delburne, AB and you can contact organizer Jason Holst for information and to register at 403-505-0742.

Matt Lait and Winston Bruce are holding a bareback and saddle bronc school on Apr 18th and 19th in Oyen, AB at the Crossroads Center. The cost is $250 and is non- refundable, due by April 11th, 2014 to: Box 6 Site 5 RR 3 Olds, AB T4H 1P4. At the end of April you can “Learn from the Best”as their poster states. Luke Snyder and Jesse Byrne make their way to Prince Albert, SK in conjunction with the Clunie-Cooper Memorial PBR. 2013 PBR Canadian Champion and many time World Finalist Zane Lambert will hold a school at Bart Winquists’ Wyld Win Arena from May 16th to 18th. Stay tuned for more details.

Lee Bellows told us about a bareback and saddle bronc school at the Moose Jaw Exhibition in the Bill Gomersall Arena May 9th to 14th. Lee is providing us with more information as it becomes available.

The Millarville Rodeo School takes place May 17th to 19th at the Millarville Rodeo Grounds. Many time NFR and CFR pick up man Gary Rempel will teach that portion of the school while protecting the cowboys. Three-time Canadian Champion Dustin Flundra teaches the saddle bronc with another three-time Canadian Champion in bareback rider Davey Shields Jr. at the helm of the bareback school. On May 24th and 25th Rick and Wacey Nash are holding a steer riding and or cow riding school at the Bowden Ag Society grounds.       Actually Tanner, Wacey Nash is holding another Steer/Cow riding school in Stettler On the 29/30th of Novenber 2014! We were at Rick and Wacey’ school this past spring and our son really really enjoyed it. The info is on the FCA website
