#2 – A $400K payday for #TeamCanada in Las Vegas

30 December 2015

By Ted Stovin

Personally, this moment meant a lot to me this year to have made my debut writing for the Calgary Herald covering the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo for them. In my opinion, the Herald is the most prestigious place in Canada to write about rodeo. All of this opinion has to do with the late, legendary Dwayne Erickson.

Even though Dwayne and I only spoke a few times, he, Tim Ellis and Dianne Finstad were the first people to ever interview me after a bull ride. That was in Innisfail, AB back in 2010 when I filled my permit. Tim told them I was a talker and Dwayne wrote about me heading to a big bull riding in Calgary at the Grey Eagle Casino that coming Monday after Innisfail. I have to find that article again as it means a lot more to me now.

That was my last real year competing and winning anything worth while. Later that year I built my website a few days after Dwayne and I visited on the steps of the Thomas & Mack. That would be the last NFR he would cover in Las Vegas, my first was the next year.

Five years later and here we are.

The story isn’t ever about us writers though in my opinion, it’s about the people telling their story to us. I never went to journalism school but I think that’s something they must teach.

Team Canada did well this year in Vegas and I hope Dwayne is proud.

I came across this song randomly today and I think it fits here. I don’t think Dwayne ever competed in rodeo but I think a lot of people considered him a cowboy.
