Canadians Ready to Battle It Out in San Antonio Semi-Finals

EDMONTON, Alberta (February 23rd, 2023) — After 14 tough performances at the San Antonio Stock Show & Rodeo, five Canadian cowboys earned their way into the semifinals, and for the next two days, they will fight it out to make it to Saturday’s finals.

Pascal Isabelle demonstrated his abilities and showed off his skills in the first bracket of the bareback riding. In round one, he matched up with a Pickett Pro Rodeo horse named Scarlet from Hell for 83 points and placed third. In the second round, Isabelle garnered 85 points for a second-place finish on Choke Cherry from the Calgary Stampede. With $3,500 won, Isabelle heads into the semifinals in second place of his bracket. After struggling with an injury a few years ago, this is a big moment for the Quebec cowboy as he gains his confidence back.

In the team roping, two familiar names appeared on the leaderboard and secured their spots in the semi-finals. Rhen Richard and Canadian cowboy Jeremy Buhler also showed what they could do in the first bracket of the rodeo. In the first round they finished in second place with a time of 4.8 and in the third round they finished fourth with a time of 5.2. After earning $3,000 total, they head into the semi-finals in fourth place of their bracket.

Lastly, in the saddle bronc riding, we will witness three of our past Wrangler NFR qualifiers compete to the best of their ability in order to make it back into the finals. Ben Anderson has come into the 2023 season stronger than ever. After winning the first two rounds and then placing third in the final round of bracket three, Anderson proved why he deserved to make it into the semifinals. In round one, Anderson matched up with Dirty Lizard from J Bar J Rodeo for 85 points to take the win, in round two he matched up with another J Bar J horse, Painted, for 86 points, and then finished third in the final round with an 82-point ride. Anderson took home $6,500 from all three rounds and headed into the semi-finals in the number one spot of bracket three.

Layton Green was also strong in bracket three, headed into the semi-finals right behind Anderson in second place of their bracket with $4,000 won. Green tied for second place with an 83-point ride in round one, and tied for the first-place finish upon a great Calgary horse, Tokyo Bubbles, for 84 points. Zeke Thurston joins them after earning $6,000 in bracket one from placing third in round one with an 84.5-point ride, first in the second round with an 88-point ride, and second in round three with an 84-point ride.

The San Antonio Stock Show & Rodeo semi-finals will take place February 23rd and 24th. Those who aren’t successful in the semis will have another shot in the wildcard round in the afternoon the 25th and then the rodeo will conclude with the finals that evening.
