Friendly bull riders dual it out at San Antonio Stock Show Rodeo

For the San Antonio Stock Show Rodeo
SAN ANTONIO, Texas (Feb. 14, 2014) — Last year was a stellar year for good friends Cooper Davis from Jasper, Texas, and Cole Echols from Elm Grove, La., as they both qualified for their first Wrangler National Finals Rodeo (NFR).
Davis, who was the National High School Rodeo Association bull riding champion in 2012, was also the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association (PRCA) Rookie of the Year in 2013. Davis won the first round of bracket four in the AT&T Center with an 88-point ride on Frontier Rodeo’s bull named Lincoln’s Logs.
Right behind him was Echols who earned $1,466 for an 85-point ride on Swamp Light, another bull owned by Frontier. Both of these talented riders are favorites to advance to the semifinals of the $1.5 million rodeo.
Rylan Geiger had a long trip to the Alamo City from Bracken, Saskatchewan, but the saddle bronc rider made it worth his while. He was 83 points on Frontier Rodeo’s Bear Paw to win $1,955. Geiger finished 25th in the PRCA world standings in 2013 and won his money north of the border in his home country. In fact, he came to a rodeo in Puyallup, Wash., in 2012 and it was just the third time he had competed in a rodeo in the U.S.
A big win here would see him changing his strategy a bit, traveling to rodeos in the lower 48 more and trying to qualify for the NFR. Geiger has been competing in the Canadian Professional Rodeo Association which co-sanctions events with the PRCA.
Annesa Self, from Sanger, Texas finished second here in 2010 and knows how electric the fans can be in the AT&T Center. Riding horses that feed off of that energy is second nature for the barrel racer. She stopped the clock in 14.16 seconds to win the first round and $1,955.
Bracket four will have two more rounds of competition on Saturday at 1 and 7:30 p.m. Semifinals qualifiers will be determined at the end of the evening performance.
