What’s That Bull for the 10th Annual Brad Phipps Memorial – August 9th, 2013

Lashburn, SK: We are already onto stop nine of the 2013 SIGA 3D Bullriding Tour with the 10th Annual Brad Phipps Memorial fast approaching. Last year, this was one of my favourite venues I visited all year.

If you’ve never been to this event, the arena is built specifically for the bull riding with tents set up for the festivities. There are trees leading into where it’s all set up and the sun sets at the right time of the day this time of year to provide an atmosphere like none other in the PBR in Canada, possibly anywhere in the world.

Last year, every seat was full and the crowd was into the show to the end. A ton of big rides have been made here. It’s not often you won’t see a 90. The short round is jam packed with Canada’s top bulls to give the guys a shot at those big numbers too.

These are my thoughts on a few of the match-ups you’ll see Friday kicking off at 7:00pm.

Ty Elliot vs. About to Blow – This bull looks to me like he fits a right handed guy a lot better than a lefty. Only trouble is he’ll spin either way. If I was getting on About to Blow I’d want him to spin into my hand. With the way he bucks he looks tough going away from a riders hand. Ty Elliot is 13th in the PBR Canadian Standings as of August 5th. My money is on an 85 or so here.

Scott Schiffner and Tanner Byrne are the only guys to ride this Two Bit Bull according to ProBullStats.com.

Cody Coverchuk vs. Back on Track – I said it yesterday that Cody is making his BFTS debut next week in Tulsa, OK but I wanted to say it again. I think it’s outstanding for him to have not left Canada and get a shot at the big leagues via three events pretty close to his home really. He’s been a champ in every level he’s competed and is on his way up in the PBR too. Back on Track is a great left spinner that Cody should spur for an 86.

Beau Hill rode the then Black Chicago in Langham last August but got involved in quite the shit-o-cane when he tried to dismount the black and white bull. #WreckWeek.

Stetson Lawrence vs. Cool Valley – Stetson sits 4th in the PBR Canadian Standings today just under 900 points behind Zane Lambert for the lead. With only a few events left, he’s going to need to keep winning to have a shot come October. Lawrence should be happy with this draw in Vold’s Cool Valley. I only remember seeing this bull go left and being tough for a right handed guy to ride. Seems like there’s a theme with this today. I think Stetson will be 87 to ride this bull and spur him a bit like Josh Birks did in Lloydminster, SK last October.

Brian Hervy vs. Devil’s Wing – Brian rides great and should fit this bull perfect I think. Devil’s Wing is a Two Bit/Morton Bull now and has similar tracks nearly every time from what I’ve seen. If this bull had a book it would say he’s black with horns and turns back to the right. Don’t get on his head like Justin Lloyd did and you should get an 86 or higher.
