-First Canadian to win Canadian Cup Series Event in 2012
Abbotsford, BC: Tyler Pankewitz, originally of Warburg, AB now residing in Ponoka, AB won his first event of the 2012 PBR Canadian Cup Season last night at the Abbotsford Invitational. Riding all three of his bulls over the two day event, he edged out New York Native Sevi Torturo by four points. World Finals Qualifier Zack Brown took third one point behind Sevi. Another point behind Zack was 2006 PBR Canada Champ Scott Schiffner. Coming in fifth covering two bulls was Asutralian Budd Willamson.
Here’s how it all went down last night at the Abbotsford Center.
Jarrod Craig started off the night with this solid ride on the Vold Bull Bomb Diggity. It eventually held up for the 2nd round win which was enough to bring him back to the Short Round.
Tyler Pankewitz took on Monkey Bones (Two Bit) and got himself an 84.5.
Matt Triplett equaled his score from night one with an 84.5 on the Rafter G Bull Black Label to finish up round two and go into the short round in first place where he would face Slash.
With more rides than any other Canadian Cup Series Event possibly in the history of the PBR in Canada it set things up for one of the best Short Rounds ever.
Going into it the Top 12 looked like this:
- Matt Triplett
- Beau Hill
- Nathan Schaper
- Tyler Pankewitz
- Sevi Torturo
- Scott Schiffner
- Zack Brown
- Zane Lambert
- Cody Moore
- Budd Willamson
- Jarrod Craig
- Stetson Lawrence
Both Stetson Lawrence and Jarrod Craig came down pretty quickly to start it off.
Budd Willamson of Australia turned it up on the white muley by the name of Turn Me Down owned by the Vold’s:
Zack Brown started off a streak of four strait rides. He took on Girletz’s Forget Me Not. This is the same bull that knocked Ty Pozzobon half out in Edmonton last winter.
2006 PBR Canadian Champion and one of Canada’s best bull riders ever, Scott Schiffner put up an 86 point score on another Girletz Bull: Cowboy’s Choice which got him within one point of Zack who held the top spot.
Sevi Torturo, the Winnipeg Cup Series Event Co-Champion continued the streak with an 85 on High Times (Two Bit). Sevi overtook Zack for the lead by one more point.
Tyler Pankewitz was matched up with the Sawyer Bull Nedley Mandingo who had not been ridden only but once before. He’d gotten most guys on his head about as soon as he turned back up until this point. Pank being the veteran he is, had a plan. Looks like it worked out.
Matt Triplett had the chance to make history with a ride on Slash. It didn’t work out for Matt. Slash was marked 45.5 out of 50 and has the highest marked out of the entire PBR Canada Season in 2012.
Here are the event’s Top 5 finishers after the short round:
- Tyler Pankewitz 252
- Sevi Torturo 248
- Zack Brown 247
- Scott Schiffner 246
- Budd Willamson 172
So that’s it this year from Abbotsford, BC. I’m sure we will be back next year as the crowd was outstanding on Saturday night as usual! I had the chance to catch up with Pank in the dressing room after for an interview. Here’s what he had to say:
Congratulations once again to all this weekend’s winners. Thanks to Abbotsford for being a great host once again as well!
