Marks Capitalizes at Elnora Brahma Rama

ELNORA, Alberta — At 19 years of age, Shay Marks has only competed at the Elnora Brahma Rama twice. But in those two years, he’s been either first or second at the event.

“Everything went almost just as planned,” Marks said afterwards. “I had a really good feeling about it. With my double entry bulls it went the exact same way last year.

“That’s gotta be one of my favourite bull ridings. Seems like I’m bound to do good there.”

The win came courtesy of a round one best 84 point effort on Road Trip from Wilson Rodeo and a finals best 86 on Rock Show from Adrenalin Cattle Co.

170 points on two gave him the win worth 60 points towards the PBR’s World Standings and another $4,109 in his bank account. Add that to the 135 points he had coming in, the 25 points from a tie for second earlier in the week in North Battleford, SK and Marks could be as high as 55th in the PBR when the standings are updated.

“It’s great,” Marks said. “It’s where I expect myself to be and want to be, just gotta keep things rolling and be consistent.”

In Canada, this week of success jumps him right into the top ten. His goals for the rest of the season have now shifted though.

“I set out to get my full Pro Rodeo card and I already did that. Then it was to move to the top five in the BRC (Bull Riders Canada Inc.),” Marks explained. “Now I think I might try and make the Built Ford Tough Series.”

He’s not the only one within reach of the PBR’s top tour after this week. Australia’s Josh Birks should sit a spot above Marks after second place finishes in both Battleford and Elnora.

With two more Canadian events, Coronation and Stavely left to go, 120 points are available here alone. Add that to the 120 available in Montana this month between Missoula this week and Eureka at the end of the month and 80 or more in Pendleton, there’s still a chance they can make the tour or the World Finals with a couple wins.

Back to Elnora, Jordan Carlier got the monkey off his back with a third place showing. Carlier put together two rides for 160.5 points total for a check worth over $2,000. Wacey Finkbeiner rounded out the top four earning nearly $1,500.

Bull of the night honors went to the hometown hosts, the Flying High Rodeo Company, with their bull +219 Blue Stone.
