Lethbridge, AB: The first stop of the 2012 3D Bull Riding tour is now in the books. All of Canada’s best bulls were showcased over the two days of competition at the Bridge City Chrysler/LA Towing PBR Challenge. Names in the likes of Unabomber, First Nation Sensation, Pawn Star and or course one of the best of all time: VJV Slash.
What happened here this weekend in Lethbridge that doesn’t often happen and may not ever happen again is that all of these top bulls were ridden. Last night Aaron Roy took on the Girletz PBR World Finals Bull First Nation Sensation and rode him for an 88.5 point score. Devon Mezei now has the highest marked ride in the PBR in Canada in 2012 after he was 90 on the Calgary Stampede young phenom Pawn Star.
Devon was in the lead going into tonight. Here’s how the rest unfolded:
It’s not very often that a bull rider can manage to stay on a bull when they are in as bad a shape as Zane Lambert was tonight. He somehow managed to stick to the Big Stone Bull Renegade for an 83.5 point score to start off the long round.
Mexico’s Luis Villareal bettered Zane’s score with a big 87 point effort on the Vold Bull Big Pressure.
Cody Ford took on Skori’s Smoke Ring.
Jason Finkbeiner spurs the Lazy R Bull called Ring My Bell. He didn’t do that to Jason today. But he did manage to put him a bit off balance.
North Dakota’s Nathan Schaper took on the Two Bit Bucking Bull Monkey Bones.
Sevi Torturo rode yet another bull up here in Canada. Tonight it was the Lazy R bull Boot Strap Bill.
Here’s how it all went down in the Short Round.
Tanner Girletz started it off with this 86 point effort on the Braithwaite bull Jackson James;
Australia’s Lachlan Richardson took on the Five Year old Flying Four Bucking Bull Krackin.
Cody Ford was the only man to ever ride Slash up to tonight. After finishing fourth in tonight’s long round, the match-up took place once again.
Luis Villareal was matched up with the bull that took Devon Mezei to the lead of the bull riding last night with that 90 point ride. It was the Calgary Stampede’s bull Pawn Star.
After finishing in a tie for second in the long go, Jason Finkbeiner was matched up with the Eno/Kubichack great Unabomber.
Jared Farley won the long round on the Calgary Stampede bull Edgar with an 88 point score. Coming into the short round in first place he needed an 89 to pass Mezei and take the lead.
In the end, neither Cody Ford riding Slash for the second time or Jason Finkbeiner making the whistle on Unabomber made up a enough ground to catch last night’s leader, Devon Mezei.
Devon is the 2012 Bridge City Chrysler/LA Towing PBR Challenge Champion and received the Championship Ring at the end of the night.
Here are final event standing and approximate winnings for each rider:
- Devon Mezei 177 – $7,000
- (Tie) Aaron Roy 174.5 – $3,500
- (Tie) Jason Finkbeiner 174.5 – $3,500
- Cody Ford 172.5 – $1,700
- Lachlan Richardson 170.5 – $1,000
