Las Vegas, NV: This afternoon at the South Point Equestrian Event Center the World Saddle Bronc Futurity impressed many. The horses were strong and bucked hard while the riders spurred their way to some big scores. Production on the event by Stace Smith was great as well and wroth the $18 price of admission.
30 riders, all who were inside the top 50 in the 2012 World Standings were entered and faced about 26 broncs entered in the futurity competing for a top prize of over $10,000. It was said a few times during the day that 13% of the horses there had already been chosen to the work the NFR. The Canadian percentage for the afternoon probably wasn’t quite 13% but the Cooper Clan bucking horse crew, managed by 2011 NFR Barrel Man Ash Cooper took home more than that percentage of the prize money.
Matched up with Utah Wright Brother by the name of Spencer, 711 Rubels of the Cooper’s bucked hard all the way across the arena getting in the air and covering some territory. 85.5 points was awarded to Spencer for his efforts on the ride while Rubels scored an 88. Those 88 points ended up finishing in second place to pick up a check for $7,130.
That’s just the start though as tomorrow she will be sold in Benny Binion’s Bucking Stock Sale. Last year the top selling horse brought $100,000
“I’m hoping she sells well. She bucks like a ten year old already.” Ash said about the five year old. “She looked like an old seasoned horse there.”
It’s likely she will bring a lot of money. We will see tomorrow.
The blaze faced mare with the number 711 is named directly after Ash’s late brother Cam’s son. Cam was the one who raised Rubels.
Ash told that his brother Cam was the most proud of next year’s colts that will be coming up.
“I’m looking forward to what next year’s horses are going to do.” He finished.
In the Short Go of the bronc riding, Dustin Flundra posted a score of 85.5 points to finish the event in third place as the final round decided who got which check.
The futurity entered horses will sell tomorrow at the South Point Arena at 1:00pm.
