2026 Battle of the North – Dawson Creek, British Columbia
Laboucane Captures Fast Time, Aggregate Lead at Battle of the North
Times continued to drop on Thursday night as the Battle of the North rolled into Night 2 at Mile Zero of the Alaska Highway in Dawson Creek, British Columbia. When the evening came to a close, it was 2026 Calgary Stampede Rangeland Derby Champion Jamie Laboucane who captured the Kirk’s Trail Tire Wheels on Fire Fast Time of the Night with a spectacular run of 1:12.80.
Driving the Wild Rows Pump & Compression Ltd. outfit from barrel position number two in the seventh heat of the evening, Laboucane posted the fastest run of the night, finishing 0.38 seconds ahead of former Battle of the North champion Chanse Vigen. World standings leader Obrey Motowylo recorded the third-fastest time, followed by Dayton Sutherland in fourth and Jason Glass in fifth.
Laboucane’s fast time vaulted him into the overall aggregate lead with a two-run combined time of 2:28.99, giving him a 0.40-second advantage over Chanse Vigen. Former Battle of the North champions Obrey Motowylo and Kurt Bensmiller currently occupy the third and fourth qualifying positions. Dayton Sutherland sits just 0.66 seconds out of the fourth and final Championship Final berth with two nights of preliminary competition remaining.
The driver leading the aggregate standings following Saturday night’s final day of preliminary competition will receive the Connie Patterson Memorial Award and a one-year lease on a 2026 GMC truck, courtesy of Banister GM Dawson Creek. The top four drivers in the aggregate will then advance to Sunday’s $30,000 Championship Final Heat, where the winner will be crowned the 2026 Battle of the North Champion.
With the Battle of the North serving as the final stop before the WPCA World Finals, the stakes couldn’t be higher. When the weekend concludes, the top 12 drivers in the WPCA World Standings will advance to the playoff round of the Kirk’s Trail Tire Series in Rocky Mountain House, making every run this weekend critical in the race for a World Finals berth.
Night 3 of the Battle of the North can be heard live Friday, August 7, on WPCA Radio beginning at 9:30 p.m. ET, 8:30 p.m. CT, 7:30 p.m. MT, and 6:30 p.m. local time on 96.5 The Ranch.
