Glass Tops Opening Night as World Championship Battle Begins
Night one of the World Chuckwagon Finals & Battle of the Rockies is in the books, and opening night was a tremendous success. Despite some early afternoon rain, conditions improved by race time, with temperatures sitting at a comfortable 18°C under mostly sunny skies and excellent racetrack conditions. With more than $300,000 in cash and prizes on the line over the five-day event, excitement filled the venue as Jason Glass captured the Kirk’s Trail Tire Wheels on Fire Fast Time of the Night with a run of 1:12.82.
Coming from barrel position number three in the ninth heat, Glass, driving the Birchcliff Energy Ltd. outfit, was 0.34 seconds faster than Jamie Laboucane. Chanse Vigen, Obrey Motowylo, and Luke Tournier rounded out the top five on opening night. The four fastest times of the evening all came from heat number nine. The driver posting the fastest four-day aggregate time after Saturday night will be declared the Battle of the Rockies champion.
In the Kirk’s Trail Tire Series Championship Playoff, Glass also led the elite field of 12 drivers, earning 12 playoff points for his outstanding run. Laboucane finished second, with Vigen, Motowylo, and Tournier rounding out the top five. After Saturday night, the top four drivers in the playoff standings will advance to the Kirk’s Trail Tire Series Championship Final Heat, where they will race for $75,000 and the prestigious title of Kirk’s Trail Tire Series Champion.
The battle for the World Chuckwagon Championship also remains extremely tight. Obrey Motowylo and Jason Glass entered the final event of the season separated by just 46 points. After night one, Motowylo continues to lead, holding a 43-point advantage over Glass, who gained three points on the world standings leader during the opening night. The World Champion Chuckwagon Driver will be crowned Saturday night, with the title going to the driver who accumulates the most points over the course of the season.
