CASPER, Wyo. (June 18, 2014) – The first time that Hayden Segelke entered the College National Finals Rodeo (CNFR) as a freshman, she earned a National Intercollegiate Rodeo Association title.
That was two years ago when she won the women’s all-around for Northeastern Junior College. She came back here last year and won it again. This year, Segelke has transferred to Eastern New Mexico University and while she isn’t in contention for the all-around, the Snyder, Colo., resident is still gunning for another national championship.
Segelke earned points in barrel racing and goat tying to win her previous all-around titles. This year, she only qualified in goat tying, and with her 6.5 second time on Wednesday night has taken the lead in the overall standings with a total time of 19.3 seconds on three runs. She was also 6.5 seconds in the first round and in the second round had a 6.3.
Shelby Winchell from Chadron State College is just one-tenth of a second behind Segelke in the overall standings with a 16.4. Then is the latest all-around contender, Jacalyn Walker with a total time of 19.8. Walker from Utah Valley University, had a time of 3.4 seconds in the breakaway roping on Wednesday night and while that won’t earn her any points in the third round, she leads the overall standings with a total time of 8.7 seconds on three runs. She is looking good to qualify for Saturday night’s finals in two events.
Stephen Culling from Northwestern Oklahoma State University is the new overall leader in steer wrestling. Culling, from Fort St. John, British Columbia, has a total time of 17.3 seconds and placed in the second round. This is his first CNFR qualification.
Odessa College is at the top of the leaderboard in the third round and overall categories in bull riding. Ty Wallace, who won the second round took the lead in the third round after riding Frontier Rodeo’s California Thunder to 89 points. This is the highest score so far this year and put Wallace in the lead in the overall with a total of 175 points on two rides. Second place in the third round and overall standings now belongs to Cody Heffernan also from the Texas school who has an 84 and 165. There have been six bull riders here who have been successful on two head. They also include the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association world standings leader Sage Kimzey from Southwestern Oklahoma State University.
Competition continues in the Casper Events Center on Thursday with the third performance featuring all of the events beginning at 7 p.m.
