Freshman move into lead at College National Finals Rodeo
CASPER, Wyo. (June 19, 2014) – Marty Yates and Cade Goodman had a lot in common at the third performance of the College National Finals Rodeo (CNFR) on Thursday night when they took the lead in the overall standings in their respective events.
Each was born and raised in Texas. Both are freshman and both compete in the Southern Region. It’s the first time they have competed in the Casper Events Center and they are both business majors. Yates, from Stephenville, Texas, is competing for Hill College (Hillsboro, Texas) in the tie-down roping.
Cade Goodman is competing in the steer wrestling for Wharton County Junior College. The Waelder, Texas, resident stopped the clock in 5.0 seconds to move into fifth place in the third round. It is his fastest time here so far and combined with his previous runs of 5.5 and 5.9 seconds, Goodman is now in contention for a national Title. He leads the overall standings with a total time of 16.4 seconds on three runs. Tyke Kipp from New Mexico State University is in second place with a total of 16.7.
Yates moved into fourth in the third round with a 9.1-second run. He won the second round with an 8.0 and had a 10.1 in the first. His total time of 27.2 is over one second ahead of Clark Adcock from the University of Tennessee – Martin who won the first round. Adcock has a total time of 28.7 seconds.
Joe Frost is a three-time CNFR qualifier for Panhandle State University in Goodwell, Okla., who is making that experience count. Frost is competing in steer wrestling and bull riding. He hasn’t had much luck in the steer wrestling, but is making up for it on the other end of the arena. The Randlett, Utah, resident is the first competitor here to be successful on three bulls. He is third in the third round after an 83.5-point ride on Thursday night. He has a total of 223.5 points and because none of the riders in Friday’s performance have ridden two, Frost will enter Saturday night’s championships in first place.
Competition continues in the Casper Events Center on Friday with the fourth performance featuring all of the events beginning at 7 p.m. At the conclusion of that performance, third round winners and championship round qualifiers will be determined.
