CALGARY, Alberta — Day Seven of the 2014 Calgary Stampede was yet another beauty. One week worth of Rodeo down, these last three days are the most exciting.
Ty Pozzobon has now gone from not having won a round at the Calgary Stampede to winning two, back to back. Today he scored 87 points on Gold Spring from Todd Braithwaite. Zane Lambert took third today with his 80 on another Braithwaite Bull, this one called Slow Lane. Both Lambert and Pozzobon have punched their ticket to Sunday sitting first and second in Pool B with their $11,000 and $10,500 respectively.
Canadian High Point Champion Morgan Grant doubled down again placing in both events for a total of $6,000. In the Tie Down he roped his calf in a time of 7.4 for third place money. Matt Shiozawa registered the fastest time of the week with his 6.9 in this afternoon’s perf. Shane Hanchey was second with a 7.2. The two lead the way in that event with $15,500 and $14,500 respectively. Grant is third with his $7,500 in that event.
In the Steer Wrestling Grant placed fourth with a 4.1 for that other $2,500 on the day to move him into a tie for second overall in Pool B with Olin Hannum. Event leader Matt Reeves won today’s round with his 3.4. Cody Cassidy picked up a check worth $3,500 today with his 4-flat.
There’s been no one better than Wade Sundell on any day here yet in Pool B. In three rounds he’s won them all with score of 84.5, 86.5 and the 88 on Holly Blues from Big Bend today. Dustin Flundra earned a fourth place check this afternoon with his 83.5 on Buckle Up from the Big Stone Rodeo Co. Flundra sits fourth overall with $6,500 won to this point.
Justin McDaniel won this afternoon’s Bareback Riding with an 89 on Calgary Stampede’s Saturn Rocket. Dusty LaValley went into today in the lead however with not placing today he’s down to fifth in Pool B with his $6,500 won to date.
Michele McLeod is the best of Day Three in Pool B of the Barrel Racing with a 17.38, the fastest time of the week. Things are very tight in the barrels at this point as it looks only Nancy Hunter with her $11,500 won is a shoe-in to Sunday.
The long go of the Steer Riding has concluded and been paid out. Coy Robbins of Camrose, AB earned the top spot with a 79.5 for just under $650 in earnings. Chad Hartman’s 77.5 got him a spot in tomorrow’s finals. Briggs Madson, Denny McKinney, JC Mortenson and Dawson Shannon compete tomorrow for the title.
One more day of competition remains in the Novice Bareback and Saddle Bronc with both events concluding on Saturday.
That’s it from Day Seven! Three days remain come tomorrow.
