Hervey and Purcell win on $10k Weekend

LONGVIEW, Alberta and PENTICTON, British Columbia — On a weekend that featured $10,000 in added prize money, current BRC number one Brian Hervey increased his lead while an Australian Bull Rider got his first win on Canadian soil.

Hervey picked up his weekend win on Saturday night at the Bull Riders Canada Challenge presented by the Longview Rodeo. Only three qualified rides would be registered all evening in over 30 outs.

The Brandt, Alberta man’s 82 point effort would be enough for the win and over $2,200 in earnings. That money means both Hervey and Josh Birks have crossed the $20,000 mark in season earnings in 2015 before anyone else has even earned $10,000. In saying that, Casey Berg’s $4,500 79 point ride as the only man to ride in the Longview finals leaves him just a toonie short at $9,998.

Even though Hervey now holds a 1,575 point lead in points over Birks, the Australian talent has an edge in the money won department by a few hundred bucks. Point wise though it would take more than three wins for Birks to catch Hervey for the title.

Chris Young, who placed second in Longview, moved from 24th in the BRC to 12th thanks to the 270 points earned there.

Across the rocks over in Penticton, BC fellow Australian Will Purcell earned his first BRC title at the 2nd Annual Speedway Bull-A-Rama. A 79 in the first round set him up to hit a home run at 85.5 points in the finals. Picking up over $3,000 for his work, it made the trip quite worth-while.

Purcell moved from 41st to 18th thanks to the win.

Second place Jacob Gardner of Fort St. John, BC may have punched his ticket to the third edition of the BRC Finals in Lloydminster, SK this coming October. Gardner moved from outside top 50 to 23rd and went home from Penticton with almost $3,700 in earnings.
