Birks Passes $50k in BRC Earnings, Hervey Builds on Standings Lead

MAYERTHORPE, Alberta; EATONIA and MIDALE Saskatchewan — On a weekend that featured three stops in two different provinces, some major moves were made.

With only $100 needed for Josh Birks to cross the $50,000 mark in Bull Riders Canada earnings, he crossed the mark in fine fashion with his ninth win of the year. Eatonia happened to be the biggest stop of the weekend adding $7,500 in prize money and awarding double points.

Birks’ score of 85 on Body Special from Eno Bucking Bulls edged Brian Hervey by a point and a half for the win and over $4,300. Point-wise, Birks only made up 60 at the Harvest Crunch since Hervey was second. The event moved both of them from being nearly untouchable in the race for the National Title.

Those 60 points evaporated for Birks as Hervey’s 73 point score in Mayerthorpe on Friday night earned him 210 points for a fifth place finish. The deficit for Birks with seven Western Canadian events left is 1,245 points. Points wise, things could be different but a couple of the wins for Birks came at events only awarding 100 points for single round of competition. Events with two rounds award a potential 400 points. Change out a win in Camrose for Birks and one or two in Balzac and that’s another 600 to 900 points cutting that lead of Hervey’s substantially.

For Hervey, only $419 separates him from the $50,000 mark in career earnings in the BRC after this weekend.

Ben Kinkead updates us from Friday’s event in Midale, SK.

Manitoba Cowboys Go 1 and 2 in Midale Sask.

After a soggy arena dried out, Bull Riders Canada rolled into Saskatchewan for the ninth annual Midale Bull Bash and Cabaret Friday, August 7th.

An extremely busy weekend for bull riding in Western Canada saw the bull riders get on two head in Midale, allowing contestants to go for as many points as possible as they work to secure their ticket to the Wrangler Bull Riders Canada Finals in Lloydminster, SK on October 2nd and 3rd.

Round one saw the bulls get all but three on the ground, but Will Purcell, the Aussie cowboy, topped the leaderboard with a with an 82, leaving him in the driver seat headed into round two.

As round two played out, the hometown man Cole Troendle took the lead with an 82.5 point ride. That was until Manitoba Cowboy Steve Maddison took the Lazy S & Bonkowski bull 3M Beef Supply to an 85, making him the man to beat.

A big effort from the round one leader Will Purcell saw him come up just short of the eight second whistle. That meant only one man could take the buckle from Maddison, that being fellow Manitoba cowboy Landon Lockhart on his re-ride after a chute foul on his round two draw. Lockhart stayed aboard but ended up with an 84 point score, putting him into second place for the event.

A placing in Eatonia, SK the evening before, along with the second place finish in Midale, has moved Lockhart into third in the BRC National Standings.

Maddison, calling the win a “momentum changer” for his season, saw the Carmen, Manitoba product put over $1,700 in his pocket and moved him from 33th to 16th, all but securing him a spot in Lloyd.

Next up for Crossfire Bullriding Promotions is the Hanover Ag Fair Bull-A-Rama August 14th which is the first of four stops in the Keystone Province wrapping up at the end of October.
