Buffalo Hills Bull Riding Goes Tonight

ARROWWOOD, Alberta — Tonight’s ninth annual Buffalo Hills Bull Riding is under a heat advisory, it’s not the first time weather has played a factor in the event either.

“We just can’t seem to get away from mother nature here,” event organizer Nate Gardner of the Rafter G Cattle Company said this morning over the phone. “At least this year it won’t be raining, hailing, flooding or storming…. hopefully, but it is Alberta.”

Bull Riders Canada Inc. has a list of their top competitors entered this evening going up against a number of the sports future superstar bovine athletes that compete for a Jensen Silver Trophy Buckle themselves this evening.

“This bull riding is for the fans first with the sponsors, bull riders, the contractors and everyone else second,” Gardner said. “Our goal is to provide the best level of entertainment we can for our community. Anything we’ve gained or created from this event over the years, we’ve put back into it to keep it growing and moving forward.”

This year the crew has brought in a big screen for sponsors, instant replays but again most of all for the fans.

Speaking of the fans, both former BRC National Champion Bull Riders are set to compete tonight for their share of the $4,000 in added money and a Jensen Silver Trophy Buckle. Brian Hervey (2013) and Cole Young (2014) go up against the likes of 2014 BRC Finals Champion Josh Birks of Australia. Hervey and Birks are also first and second in the current BRC National Standings.

On the production side of things four-time Canadian Pro Rodeo Association Announcer of the Year Brett Gardiner is your host along with his pal Mike LaBelle taking care of the sponsors. Bailey Sawyer is on the tunes while Lon Streeter and Tyrone Maines fight the bulls. Bringing those bulls are the Outlaw Buckers Rodeo Corp., Wild Hoggs Bucking Bulls, Vold/Prescott, Wilson Rodeo, Rafter G Cattle Co., Two Bit Bucking Bulls and the Flying High Rodeo Co.

Personally, and on behalf of Everything Cowboy Inc., I’ve got to say thank you to the Buffalo Hills Bull Riding Committee, Arrowwood Ag Society and Nate Gardner for having me at their event over the past five years.

Speaking of the future stars I remember getting on or seeing a Flying High Rodeo Company bull by the name of Burn it to the Ground in Arrowwood in 2010. That bull has gone on to be one of the top bulls on the truck for the Calgary Stampede. The bull I rode Mexican style, with both feet and no hands, to win the event in 2011 is also now with Calgary and still called Jett due to his ‘747’ brand.

Arrowwood in 2011 was the bull riding I won to this point. Not saying I’m going to ride again or not but it’s the last one I won and also one of the first I worked the very next year for Everything Cowboy.

It’s great to see such a forward-thinking committee at this level it’s completely necessary for the future growth of our sport. Other bull riding and rodeo events take note, even Birks and Gardner are heading to the local school today to do a presentation and give tickets to the kids for tonight’s event.

It all starts tonight in Arrowwood at 7:00pm and continues afterwards at the Mossleigh Bar and Grill. On the weekend don’t forget the CCA and CRA co-sanctioned semi-pro rodeo.

See you all in Arrowwood!
