Birks Cracks Top Ten With Win in GP

GRANDE PRAIRIE, Alberta — Australian Bull Rider Josh Birks has cracked the top ten of the 2014 Bull Riders Canada Standings with his win this past weekend at the Pomeroy Guitars and Wagons BRC Challenge presented by CDN Controls.

Birks scored 85 on Braithwaite Ranches’ Compton Bound for the event win after no other bull riders made the whistle in the championship round in two nights of action.

That 85 was worth over $5,000 in cash for Birks which moves his season total to over $8,000 and moved him up to the number nine spot on the year. This is the second event win in June for Josh Birks and may not be the last with two events left this month in Arrowwood and Grenfell.

The bull riding at Guitars and Wagons wasn’t the only event however. Throughout the day one could watch team roping, barrel racing, trick riding, chuckwagon racing and David Lee Murphy even performed last night concluding the wagons. There was something at Evergreen Park for everyone as other headliners on the weekend included Dean Brody, Big Wreck, Serena Ryder and Dwight Yoakam.

Cawl Braithwaite wasn’t worried about the concerts as he was there helping his Dad, Todd with the bulls. When a rider didn’t show up on Friday night, he made the best of it. A score of 82 on a bull of his fathers called What’s My Name earned him nearly $4,000.

Cawl will require some more bull rides this year if he wishes to make the Wrangler Bull Riders Canada Finals II presented by The Patchwork Group in Lloydminster, SK come October. He sits one spot out after this in 31st place.

Nearly hometown Cowboy Cole Young ended up in a tie for third with Riley Gibson and Austin Nash, with his 80 in Body Damage from the Calgary Stampede.

Gerard Oversby won the high flying award after his dismount from Western, from the Calgary Stampede.
